     George Sheard was born on 22 April 1901 at Halifax.¹ He was the son of Will Sheard and Mary Jane Wilson.
In the census of 2 April 1911 he was listed as at school, the son of Will Sheard at 27 Orchard Street, Savile Town, Dewsbury.²
George Sheard was educated at the Wheelwright Grammar School, Dewsbury, and then at the Bradford Textile Institute.
He was employed by Henry Hamer & Sons of Ravensthorpe, then primarily a manufacturer of men's overcoatings.
He married Marjorie Senogles on 10 March 1931 at Menai Bridge, Anglesey.^3,1

Following their marriage George and Marjorie sailed for Canada, where George had been assigned by Hamers to establish a shoddy-based woollen mill in St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec. The objective was to retain Canadian clients otherwise lost by Canada's imposition of restrictive tariffs.¹
In 1937 George bought a country mill in Way’s Mills, Québec, which became Geo. Sheard Fabrics Limited. It manufactured meltons and friezes, and much of it burned down in March, 1942. Due to the fact that the firm was working entirely on service uniforms and blankets during the War, it received the necessary permits to purchase new equipment, and started afresh in Coaticook, Québec from whence it is still operating.¹

George Sheard and his son Douglas Sheard visited Batley millowner Theodore Cooke Taylor in Batley shortly after his hundredth birthday.¹
Mr. Taylor told George that he had changed his Daimler car a short time before, having had the previous one, with the same chauffeur, for the last 30 years. His driver was now in his 70’s. As they were driving back on the first evening after having picked up the new car, he asked the driver how he liked it.
“Well,” he grumbled, “This….. was not as before, and that….. doesn’t work so well.” “Anyway,” he said, “If it lasts as long as the last one, we shan’t grumble.”
At the telling of this to George, Mr. Taylor burst into laughter.¹

In 1964 George Sheard was George's businesss changed its direction, and is now manufacturing exclusive fabrics for commercial upholstery applications, (offices, public buildings, hotels, etc.).¹
He died on 28 April 1985 at Coaticook, Quebec, Canada, at age 84.¹

     Gertrude Sheard was born circa 1871 at England. She was the daughter of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 1880 she was listed as aged 9 the daughter of Jonas Sheard at 3rd Dist, Johnston,, Providence, Rhode Island.¹
In the census of 16 February 1892 she was listed as Gertie, aged 22 the daughter of Jonas Sheard at Little Falls, Herkimer, New York.²

     May Sheard was born circa 1881. She was the daughter of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 8 June 1900 she was listed as the daughter of Jonas Sheard at Cleveland Township, Ohio.¹

     William Sheard was born in September 1885. He was the son of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 8 June 1900 he was listed as the son of Jonas Sheard at Cleveland Township, Ohio.¹
William Sheard died in 1906 at Cleveland, Ohio.²

     Robert Sheard was born in 1887. He was the son of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 8 June 1900 he was listed as the son of Jonas Sheard at Cleveland Township, Ohio.¹

     Harold Sheard was born in 1888. He was the son of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 8 June 1900 he was listed as the son of Jonas Sheard at Cleveland Township, Ohio.¹

     Leslie Sheard was born in December 1892. He was the son of Jonas Sheard and Hannah Roberts. In the census of 8 June 1900 he was listed as the son of Jonas Sheard at Cleveland Township, Ohio.¹

     Edwin Colbeck was born on 14 February 1842 at Batley.^1,2 He was the son of Israel Colbeck and Elizabeth Exley.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a scholar the son of Israel Colbeck at Havercroft, N side Commercial St., Batley.³
Edwin Colbeck married Jane Greaves, daughter of Charles Whitworth and Maria Nightingale, on 20 August 1868 at St Peter's Church, Earlsheaton.¹
It seems to have been soon after this that Edwin's father took his family to France, and Edwin and his wife were also to settle there.⁴
In 1876 Edwin Colbeck set up a factory at Loups à Maromme near Rouen. It appears to have been with Jane's money that the price of 125, 000 francs was paid.^1,5
Following Jane's death Edwin Colbeck de a late second marriage to Emily Kilburn on 2 March 1918 at Bristol.¹
Edwin Colbeck died on 19 April 1921 at Maromme, Seine Maritime, France, at age 79.¹

     Ann Colbeck was born circa 1845. She was the daughter of Israel Colbeck and Elizabeth Exley. In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as a scholar the daughter of Israel Colbeck at Havercroft, N side Commercial St., Batley.¹

     Ellen Colbeck was born in 1850. She was the daughter of Israel Colbeck and Elizabeth Exley. In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as aged 7 months the daughter of Israel Colbeck at Havercroft, N side Commercial St., Batley.¹

     Juliet Colbeck was born on 5 July 1857. She was the daughter of Isaac Colbeck and Elizabeth Ineson. Juliet Colbeck was baptized on 16 August 1857 at Batley.¹
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as the daughter of Isaac Colbeck at Broomfield House, Soothill.²
In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as a scholar the daughter of Isaac Colbeck at Brier Hall, Gomersal.³
Juliet Colbeck married Thomas William Greenwood, son of Richard Greenwood and Hannah Cliff, in 1877.⁴

Juliet Colbeck died on 14 February 1892 at New York at age 34.⁶

     Rose McGovner was born in November 1869. She married Thomas Bailey, son of Charles Bailey and Ellen Senior, in 1895.¹

     Charles Senior Bailey was born in December 1895 at New York.^1,2 He was the son of Thomas Bailey and Rose McGovner. In the census of 20 June 1900 he was listed as at School the son of Thomas Bailey at Fort Plain Village, Minden Township, Montgomery, New York.¹
In the census of 9 January 1920 he was listed as assistant foreman knit mill the son of Thomas Bailey at Fort Plain Village, Minden, Montgomery, New York.³

     Sarah Ann Babington was born circa 1871 at Coningsby, Lincoln. She married Thomas Clifton Sheard, son of Benjamin Sheard and Mary Senior, in 1893 at Horncastle.
In the census of 31 March 1901 Sarah Ann Sheard was listed at 12 Valley Terrace, Shadwell, Wetherby, as wife of Thomas Clifton Sheard.¹

     Elizabeth Belton married Thomas Whitworth, son of Charles Whitworth and Maria Nightingale, on 22 November 1866 at Wragby.¹

     Marjorie Senogles was born on 27 March 1906 at Menai Bridge, Anglesey.¹

She died on 26 November 1969 at Coaticook, Quebec, Canada.¹

     Douglas Sheard was born on 27 April 1932 at Québec City, Canada.¹ He is the son of George Sheard and Marjorie Senogles. Douglas Sheard was educated at Bishop’s College School, Lennoxville, Québec, then Phillips Exeter Academy, in Exeter, New Hampshire, followed by Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., then Leeds University.

Douglas Sheard and his father George Sheard visited Theodore Cooke Taylor in Batley shortly after his hundredth birthday.¹ Theodore Cooke Taylor told Douglas that he had, as a very young man, been in partnership with his great grandfather William Sheard and invested in his enterprise.¹

On graduation Douglas Sheard started working for George Sheard Fabrics Ltd., the firm established by his father.
He married Gönen Piyale, daughter of Tahsin Piyale, on 2 May 1957 at Istanbul The couple were to have three children.¹
On his retirement in 1994 Douglas Sheard passed the business on to two of his children.¹
Sadly Gönen died in 2005 after a long and happy marriage, but on 25 August 2007 Douglas married his charming second wife.

It was in part the slightly poignant sense of being the one in my own line who had moved away and had no connection with the textile trade after so many generations in wool in Yorkshire that prompted my work in family history. Thus I have been especially delighted to hear of Sheards still making cloth, with an impressively updated version of those ancient skills.

     Eliza Walker was born circa 1807 at Pontefract. She married George Fawcett, son of James Fawcett, on 24 November 1835 at St Peters, Leeds.^1,2

     Sarah Jane Ingraham was born circa 1852. She married Theodore Cooke Taylor, son of Joshua Taylor and Alice Cooke, in 1874.
