Descendants of Joseph Hall
     Thomas Hall was born in 1750 at Dewsbury. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Dorothy Bottomley. Thomas Hall was baptized on 1 January 1750/51 at Dewsbury.1

He married Frances Allott, daughter of Joseph Allott and Grace Oddy, on 7 February 1772 at the Parish Church, Birstall, "Thomas Hall of parish of Batley & Frances Allott of Heckmondwike in this parish; by banns." He signed, she made her mark. Witnesses were Joseph Blackburn and William Haley.2

Thomas Hall witnessed the marriage of Joshua Stubley and Mary Blackburn on 28 April 1793 at Batley.3

Frances having died in 1826 Thomas Hall made a late second marriage to Elizabeth Sheard on 21 June 1830 at Birstall

; by licence. Thomas was described as of Batley and Elizabeth of Heckmondwike.2 Thomas Hall made a will in 1832 describing himself as Clothier and Farmer, and making provision for his wife Elizabeth to take what goods she needs to furnish one room, the rest of his personal effects to be sold. He bequeathed one third part of his interest in The Old Mill to his son Joseph, and two thirds to his son James, but the latter to set aside £300, the interest to provide for Elizabeth until his son William is twenty-one, when half of it is to be given to him and the rest to his wife. with various provisions for if either die or Elizabeth marry again.
James is also to get forty pounds and two cottages at Clerk Green. Daughters Dorothy and Grace each get two cottages and Rebacca three. Son Joseph gets his interest in the farm which he holds on a lease from Mrs Ingham, Elizabeth to be allowed to live there.
Son Thomas gets one hundred and fifty pounds , son Henry one hundred and, an informative bequest; his father's stand in the Leeds White Cloth Hall. Two other children, John and Mary, have predeceased him, but their children each get £10 (John had nine and Mary ten).
Thomas Hall died on 8 September 1835 at Batley.4
He was buried on 11 September 1835 at Batley ; aged 84.3

     Joseph Hall was born on 24 July 1774.1 He was the son of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott. Joseph Hall was baptized on 28 August 1774 at Batley.1

He married Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of John Taylor, on 1 August 1796 at Batley witnesses were Joseph Seed and John Janson(Ineson?).1

In 1835 Joseph Hall inherited a one third part of his father's interest in The Old Mill at Batley.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer. With the family at this time is Charles Sharp, aged 15, listed as a machine maker's apprentice.2
On 20 September 1849 Joseph Hall sold his share in The Old Mill to Mr John Burnley and his trustee Mr Samuel Burnley 20 September 1849.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green as a blanket maker aged 76.3
He died in 1854. He was buried on 26 March 1854 at Batley ; aged 79, as of Clerk Green.1

In 1835 Rebecca inherited three freehold cottages at Clerk Green, one occupied in 1832 by Joseph Blagborough and his widow, and the others being in th occupation of Rebecca and her husband.

     James Hall was born on 3 September 1788. He was the son of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott. James Hall was baptized on 17 September 1788 at Batley.1

James Hall married Martha Hirst, daughter of Job Hirst and Christiana Carr, on 31 December 1810, at Batley witnessed by (Thos?) Hirst and Jeremiah Chadwick.1
James Hall and Martha Hall were said to have adopted Martha's nephew, William Dean.
James inherited two thirds of his father's interest in the Old Mill at Batley, but was to put aside £300 to make provision for his stepmother and her son. He also inherited two cottages occupied in 1832 by Sarah Hall and John Brooke, as well as the sum of forty pounds. in 1835.
James Hall was said to have been the builder of Purlwell Mill, though Willans associated him with his brothers and also Robert Brearley senior and Thomas Hirst.2
From around 1837 James Hall was in a partnership with Joseph Parker , Michael Spedding and Phineas Fox and Leeds cloth merchant Matthew Johnson. The partnership, styled Hall, Johnson, Spedding & Co are said to have been in business at Purlwell Mill.3
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Aldams House, Dewsbury, as a woollen manufacturer.4
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Purlwell, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer employing 78 persons. With the family at this time are lodging George M Hirst, aged 23, a manufacturer, employing 4 persons, and William Hirst, a woollen weaver, aged 18. Whilst George's age would fit with the nephew living with the couple in 1841 William would seem to be a different William Hirst.5
James Hall died on 8 May 1855 at age 66; aged 66 years.6 In 1855 James Hall was said to have left Purlwell Mill to his nephew William Dean.

Henry Hall was, according to the will of his father Thomas, who died in 1835, to be the inheritor of his stand in the Leeds White Cloth Hall in 1832.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a Woollen Manufacturer.2
He was probably the old knurr and spell player mentioned by John Blackburn as among the masters meeting at Jim Redfearn's public house at the time of the boiler tapping riots.3
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a Woollen Manufacturer; firm of 8(?) employing 29 men, 3 women, 10 boys and 11 girls.

     Elizabeth Taylor was the daughter of John Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor married Joseph Hall, son of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott, on 1 August 1796 at Batley witnesses were Joseph Seed and John Janson(Ineson?).1
In the census of 6 June 1841 Elizabeth Hall was listed at Clerk Green, Batley, as wife of Joseph Hall.2
Elizabeth Hall was listed on the census of 30 March 1851 at Clerk Green as 75 year old wife of Joseph Hall.3 Elizabeth Taylor died on 22 April 1866. She was buried on 25 April 1866 at Batley ; aged 89.1

Robert Brearley

#699, b. circa 1775, d. 11 September 1861
     Robert Brearley was born circa 1775 at All Saints, Wakefield,He may have been the Robert son of Mary Brearley baptised Augsust 5th 1775 in Wakefield.1 He married Dorothy Hall, daughter of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott, on 13 April 1797 at Batley witnessed by Stephen Hudswell and Joseph Hall.2
1841 Robert Brearley was listed as in partnership at Clerk Green with sons Robert and Daniel, Mark Terry, Henry Hall and James Redfearn and Thomas Gledhill as Brearley Terry and Company, scribblers and fullers.3
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Purlwell, Batley, as a Woollen manufacturer.4
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Purlwell, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer , firm of 8 employing 30 men, 4 women, 15 boys and 10 girls. With the family are Mary Turpin, a house servant aged 16 from Ireland, and William Schofield, a Bobbin winder, born in Dewsbury.5
He died on 11 September 1861; aged 86.6 He was buried on 14 September 1861 at Parish Church, Batley.2

Isaac Binns tells of what must have been the home of Robert Brearley:-

"I was in a house the other day at Purlwell, which was built by the first manufacturer of the Brearley family, with the special idea of combining living and working rooms together, The chambers were for the looms, the present long narrow kitchens at the back were for warping woof and creel; and the living rooms were in front - house and parlour in old style, with shut-up beds of course.7"

Samuel Harrison

     Samuel Harrison was born circa 1785 at Wakefield. He married Rebecca Hall, daughter of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott, on 3 July 1807 at Batley witnessed by Robert Brearley and Joseph Preston.1
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a Grocer.2
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a shop-keeper, grocer aged 65.3
Samuel Harrison died in November 1858. He was buried on 3 December 1858 at Batley ; aged 72, of Clerk Green.1
