Relationship=1st cousin 5 times removed of Vivien Eley.
Robert Spedding was born in September 1819 at Batley. He was the son of Michael Spedding and Hannah Ineson.
Robert Spedding was baptized on 5 September 1819 at Parish Church, Batley.1
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as aged 20 the son of Michael Spedding at New Road Side, Havercroft, Batley.2
The first indication we have of Robert going to America is in 1841 when he sailed on the "Sheffield" from Liverpool, arriving in New York on the 29th of September.3
Robert Spedding married Jeanette Maria (?) circa 1843.
In the census of 25 September 1850 he was listed as in the household of William Hadden at New Utrecht, Kings, New York, Robert is listed as a merchant. I do not know if the Hadden's are just people he is lodging with, or whether there is some other connection. A possibility is that they were Jeanette's parents. His age is wrong, but he is clearly the person we find in later censuses with this more correctly shown. This means we cannot trust Jeannette's age, but she is too old to be a daughter, and I think must be his wife. However, if this age is anywhere near correct she is too young to be the mother of his children, and there must have been an earlier wife.4
In the sameyear Robert Spedding was listed in a New York Directory as an importer.5
In 1856 Robert Spedding was described in a codicil to his father's will as American agent of himself and his youngest son Thomas Spedding.
In the census of 31 July 1860 he was listed as the head of household at New Utrecht, Kings, New York, as a Merchant, with real estate valued at $10,000 and personal estate valued at $3,000. Also present are Mary A Euston, aged 30, and gardener Richard White and servant Kate Musgrave.6
In 1867 Robert Spedding applied for US Nationality.
In the census of 5 July 1870 he was listed as the head of household at New Utrecht, Kings, New York, Robert's real estate is now valued at $3,200 and no figure is given for personal estate.7
In the census of June 1880 he was listed as the head of household at New Utrecht, Kings, New York.8
In the census of 9 June 1900 he was listed as the head of household at Brooklyn, New York, Kings, New York, Thee is a servant Maggie Morrisey and a coachman Edward Smyth.9
He died on 10 November 1901 at 6.400 Eighteenth Ave, Brooklyn, New York, at age 82.10
