Arthur William Dodgshun was born in 1847.1 He was the son of Isaac Dodgshun and Eliza Naylor. In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the son of Isaac Dodgshun at Elmwood Green, Leeds.2
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as a woollen manufacturer the nephew of James Dodgshun.3 An earlier connection of Joseph Parker as agent for the Dodgshuns has been noted, and for a time Arthur William Dodgshun , son of wool merchant Isaac, was in partnership with Joseph and his sons as woollen manufacturers and scrbbling millers at Batley, withdrawing from this in January 1873.4
On 15 March 1877 Arthur William Dodgshun was ordained as one of the missionaries of the London Missionary Society and soon after left as one of the members of a mission to Tanganyika. This was to be an ill-fated expedition. Plans to travel with wagons hauled by oxen were thwarted when the oxen succum bed to tsetse flies, and the expedition had to wait for a season before they could proceed. then dogged by the death of their original leader, desertion of their porters, attacks and theft of their goods.5
He died in 1879 at Ujiji, Africa, only a week after his arrival there.5
