James Dodgshun married Fanny Naylor, daughter of Abraham Naylor and Ann (?), on 26 April 1841 at Belgrave Chapel, Leeds, James's occupation is given as Merchant.1
In June 1850 James Dodgshun described as an English Merchant from Hamburg, sought permission from the local magistrates to build a Shoddy Factory in  at Wittenberge on the River Elbe. Local documentation tells of a sixty foot chimney and a twelve horsepower steam engine, the first in Wittenberge.
Joseph Naylorseems to have been associated with his brother-in-law James from an early stage.
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at 19 Lyddon Terrace, Leeds, as a wool merchant.
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at 35 Lyddon Terrace, Leeds, as a retired woolstapler.2
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Hamburg Villa, Clarendon Road, Leeds, Also present are Clarissa Smith, daughter of a niece, and a cook and housemaid.3
