Thomas Shepley|d. Aug 1596|p98.htm#i2958|an unknown Shepley||p165.htm#i4832||||||||||||||||
Relationship=11th great-grandfather of Vivien Eley.
Thomas Shepley was the son of an unknown Shepley. Unknown because he was born before Parish Records began for Mirfield, which was in September 1559.
Two children are registered as born in Mirfield, but we know that there were others from later mentions.
We also know that he had a brother, Robert from references in Robert's will.
His brother Robert died in 1571, and in his will he mentions Edward, Thomas and Isabel, and their sisters, children of his brother.
At this date it is often easier to find out more about wealthier relations who may make wills or be recorded in other transactions, and these Shepleys certainly appear among these.
Much of what we know about Thomas comes from his own will made on 17 June 1596 Described as Thomas Shepley the Elder, yeoman, he asks that he be buried in Mirfield Church or churchyard, and leaves ten shillings to the local poor and twenty shillings to the mending of the highways. There are also bequests to all his servants, singling out one, Alice Sykes, who receives a larger sum of £3.6s 8d.
We learn that he is possessed of leases of fulling mills, one on the River Calder near the Queens's corn mills at Wakefield, others described as near to Wakefield, and one at Alverthorpe. These are left in trust for Thomas, Edward and Richard, sons of his younger son Edward Shepley.1 Although his elder son Thomas was an executor of the will, it sets out provision for his brother's sons; Presumably provision was otherwise made for his elder son. Thomas Shepley died in August 1596 at Mirfield. He was buried on 21 August 1596 at Mirfield.2

Robert Shepley made a will on 18 May 1571 at the time he was living with John Walker whose wife was a Shepley, possibly his sister.
A colourful detail is his mention of his "cloke, beste hose, dublet and jacket" left to John Walker, whilst other bequests include "my workeday jacket and dublet" to an Edward France.1 In his will he mentions Edward, Thomas and Isabel, and their sisters, children of his brother Thomas.
