Samuel Senior was baptized on 13 September 1835 at Batley.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as aged 5 the son of Benjamin Senior at Havercroft Lane end, Batley.1
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as as a clerk the son of Benjamin Senior at Havercroft, Batley.2
Early Business ventures
Samuel Senior was for a time in partnership with Henry Sheard and Samuel Sheard as woollen manufacturers in the firm of Sheard and Senior at Victoria Mill, but withdrew from the partnership on 30 December 1857.3
The firm were listed as at Victoria Mill under the heading of Blanket Manufacturers and again under the heading of Woollen Manufacturers.4
Samuel Senior together with Henry Sheard and Samuel Sheard were also among some dozen partners in Toad Pipes Mill, another company venture, where cloth finishing appears to have been carried out, for in 1857 finishing machinery was offered for sale. Soon after that the mill was sold.
Samuel Senior married Elizabeth Brearley, daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill, on 19 October 1859 at Batley.5,6
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Healey Bottom, Batley, as a Shoddy Merchant. One servant, Hannah Lee, is kept, and Mary Brearley, aged 24, a dressmaker, is visiting.7
Samuel Senior went into partnership with his cousins Joseph Talbot and Robert Talbot. This was at the Britannia Mills at Morley, the firm becoming known as Talbot, Senior and Talbot. In 1866 they came into possession of Bulrush Mills at Carlinghow, and did very well in the period of the Franco-Prussian war.
In 1870 Samuel Senior was still listed as in business with the Talbots.8
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Albert Terrace, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer.9
He retired from the business in 1872.
The Rookery
after 1872 Samuel Senior lived at The Rookery, Upper Batley,, built with his proceeds from the business. This house has gone, but like George Sheard's "The Woodlands" which survives as the Bagshaw Museum, it was designed by the firm of Sheard and Hanstock. It appears to have been on a similar scale, and also had a tower feature, but was more Italianate in style.
When the house was put up for auction in 1899 it was described as having a large hall, drawing, dining and breakfast rooms, library, butlers pantry, two kitchens and a lavatory. The first floor had four principal bedrooms and a biliard room, bathroom, lavatory and w.c. On the first floor were six further bedrooms, whilst the basement had wine and keeping cellars. There was a coachman's house, carriage house, and stabling for 4 horses. Well laid out grounds included a conservatory, tennis lawn and kitchen and flower gardens. A surviving photograph shows a richly decorated dining room.10
In 1874 Samuel Senior formally withdrew from partnership with his Talbot cousins.3
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Upper Batley as a retired manufacturer.11
He died on 4 April 1885.12 He was buried on 8 April 1885 at the Cemetery, Batley.12
Later Harry Blackburn and his wife Emma Beatrice moved into "The Laurels" in Upper Batley, a house which apears to be an adaptation of the outbuildings of Samuel Senior's "The Rookery"..13,12
