William Rawden was born on 26 December 1829 at Huddersfield. He was the son of Benjamin Rawden and Charlotte Preston. William Rawden was baptized on 11 April 1830 at Batley.1
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as as a piecener the son of Benjamin Rawden at Batley.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a mason the son of Benjamin Rawden at Carlinghow, Batley.2
William Rawden married Mary Roberts in 1851.3
In 1852 William Rawden and Mary Rawden with their infant son travelled to America sailing on the Huguenot from Liverpool to New York and arriving on the 10th of June.4
In the census of 13 July 1860 he was listed as the head of household at Ward 16 District 4, New York, New York, as a stone cutter.

One who was to contribute much to Batley Cemetery in his work on many of the impressive memorials there was monumental mason/sculptor William Rawden and I wonder if it was news of the opportunities afforded by Michael Sheard's scheme that led him to return from America sometime in the 1860s.
In 1870 William Rawden was was listed as a stonemason at Cemetery road.5
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Cemetery Road, Batley, as a sculptor employing 2 men.6
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Cross Bank Street, Batley, as a monumental sculptor.7
He died on 8 April 1887 at age 57.8
He was buried in the cemetery where so much of his work is displayed, and my image of him comes from his own monument.
