Henry Norman Rae was born on 20 January 1860 at Prospect House, Healey, Batley.1 He was the son of James Rae and Elizabeth Edith Dewey.
Henry Norman Rae was educatedat Batley Grammar School and then at a boarding school on the south coast.1 Was then apprenticed to the firm of Abraham Brooke & Co, where he is said to have been a quick learner who emulated his employer's high ideals and integrity and was promoted accordingly.
Henry Norman Rae married Emily Cass on 30 July 1883.1
Henry Norman Rae set up a substantial business with a colleague as Pickles and Rae, Ltd, Wool and Top Merchants, at Greenhill Mills, Bradford.
In the census of 31 March 1901 he, listed as a wool merchant, and his wife were visiting Martha Taylor and her daughter Elsie at Westfield, Healey, Batley.2
In 1904 Henry Norman Rae was elected to the West Riding County Council as representative for the Pateley Bridge area.
In 1911 Henry Norman Rae was stood as a Liberal candidate for the Ripon division, but was unsuccessful.
Success came later when in in 1918 he won a seat for the Shipley Division, standing as a supporter of Lloyd Beorge's Coalition Government; heavily defeating Mr Tom Snowden, the labour candidate.
The end of the First World War brought a suggestion from the head and governors of Batley Grammar School that the establishment of a Scholarship fund would be a fitting memorial to those who had lost their lives in the war. In response to this Sir Norman gave £10,000; a part of which was to be allocated to the Girls Grammar School.
In 1922 Henry Norman Rae was was knighted, but chose to stand down at the next election.
The Saviour of Oakwell Hall
Henry Norman Rae's importance for our local story came in 1927 when
Oakwell Hall at Birstall, offered for sale in the previous year, was in danger of being dismantled and shipped to America by persons with a connection with the Batt family who had once owned it.
Together with a Harrogate neighbour, Mr John E Sharman, Rae bought the house and met the cost of subsequent restoration, then presenting it on trust to the Birstall Urban District council. Thanks to this generous gift, the house is open to the public now.1,3
Sir Norman's wife died in 1927, and he subsequently became engaged to Miss Gertrude Elsie Taylor , an old friend in Batley.1
