John Beswicke Greenwood was born in 1797. He was the son of Abram Greenwood and Grace Taylor. John Beswicke Greenwood was baptized on 9 February 1797 at Dewsbury.1
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at 18 Woburn Square, Bloomsbury, Middlesex, as a magistrate. With him were his married sister Grace, and Mary Amelia Taylor aged 35.2
Now sitting as a Magistrate in Yorkshire, John Beswicke Greenwood promised to see that William Hall got a Government reward if he apprehended Dewhirst, the leader of the local Plug Rioters.
William was successful, and John Beswicke Greenwood ensured that he received a £50 Government reward.3

He was listed in the census of 30 March 1851 at Moor Bottom, Dewsbury, as a barrister in practice, function apparent (my interpretation: these words are not very clear).4
He was the author of "The Early Ecclesiastical History of Dewsbury", published in 1859.
He was listed in the census of 7 April 1861 more specifically as a barrister not in actual practice, but a Magistrate acting for the West Riding of Yorkshire., and by 1871 he is listed as chairman of the West Riding Sessions.
He inherited the Purlwell estate from his aunt Elizabeth Foxcroft Taylor.5
In 1866 John Beswicke Greenwood granted a mortgage of £2000 on some of John Blackburn's properties at Batley and at Kirkham Gate.
John Beswicke Greenwood died in 1879.
He left most of his wealth to William Carr.
John Beswicke Greenwood was mentioned by Isaac Binns. Speaking of the unpaved, rutted, muddy roads of the Batley of his youth, he ascribes to John , old "Beswick" as he calls him, the epithet of "mucky Batley."6
