In 1910 William Middlebrook was Lord Mayor of Leeds, during which time he inaugurated a substantial scheme for the extension of LeedsGeneral Infirmary.
He received a knighthood in 1916. In 1930 William Middlebrook was made a baronet.
He died on 30 June 1936 at Scarborough.

In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Birstall S Street, Birstall, as a linen draper employing 1 assistant.1
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Gelderd Road, Gomersal, as a merchant of soft goods aged 38.2
It is said that John Middlebrook joined John Nussey's business at Carlinghow Mill to manage the financial side.3
In 1868 John Middlebrook lost money through the failure of the Leeds Banking Company and Carlinghow Mill passed into the hands of a company called John Nussey & Co, partners being John Barran, John Nussey , Henry Brooke and Edwin Wilford.
