Jubb and Unna; a woollen mill in Fischamend, Austria

George Bennet Jubb must have moved to Fischamund in Austria soon after his marriage to superintend the firm of Jubb and Unna in which his elder brother Arthur Alma Jubb was a partner. From an account of Danube floods we learn that the mill had two waterwheels as well as an engine. By the 28th of December 1882 the waterwheels were out of action, described as "in backwater", and the engine stopped on the 30th, the mill being surrounded by water. George and Ada were living in Fischamend when a dreadful incident occurred in which George was injured.
On 2 January 1883 George Bennet Jubb was stabbed several times and and his cousin Joseph Marriott, was fatally wounded, dying early the following morning.

The Danube had burst its banks, and there was heavy flooding. It appears to have been on account of this that female weavers were housed in a barn in poor conditions. The story goes that George and his companions, Joe Marriott and Dick Carter, who had been in an adjacent brewhouse, went to see if they were warm enough, and was ordering wine to be warmed for the women when a young man, perhaps a sweetheart of one of the women, broke in. They tried to get him to leave, but he and his comrades attacked George and Joe.
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Ebury Street, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer.4
In the census of 31 March 1901 he was listed as the head of household at 29 Carlinghow Lane, Batley, as living on his own means.5
George Bennet Jubb died on 23 May 1906.
