In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the son of Benjamin Sheard at Havercroft, Batley.2
David Sheard married Caroline Jackson on 20 September 1860 at Batley.3
In the census of 7 April 1861 David Sheard, listed as a lodger, appeared as a rag machine overlooker, now married to Caroline, in the household of his mother Margaret Sheard at Old Mill Lane, Batley.4

In 1862 David and Caroline Sheard emigrated to America with their daughter, sailing from Liverpool to New York on the "Constitution of Liverpool" and arriving on the 27th August.5
