Abraham Brooke was born in 1810 at Dewsbury. He was the son of John Brooke and Elizabeth (?). Abraham Brooke was baptized on 16 September 1810 at Dewsbury.1
He married Ann Nettleton, daughter of Joseph Nettleton and Rachel Scargill, on 22 October 1835 at Dewsbury.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Soothill Lower as a woolstapler. Also present are Mary Savile, a female servant, and Thomas Armatage, a fellmonger.2
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Soothill lane, Soothill, as a woolstapler employing 6 men.
One who worked for Abraham Brooke in the 1850s was my great great grandfather Abraham Binns.3
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Soothill Lane as a wool merchant employing 9 men. Also present is Mary Horner, a cousin.4
James Willans has the following to say about this Abraham Brooke:-
"I will just say a few words about the dealers in raw material used in the manufacturing of the district. Taking wool, Mr. A. Brooke, first apprentice to Mr. Watson, skinner , of Soothill, commenced in the wool business say 50 years ago, going to Bradford and other markets and buying wool, noils and shorts suitable for the Batley trade and also attended the London Wool Markets, buying such wools as suited his customers, a few bales at a time at the first and rapidly increasing the quantity until now, and for some years he has been one of the largest buyers at the London Sales, and has now the most extensive connection amongst manufacturers in the district for miles around. No doubt upright fair dealing, along with a knowledge of the busines has been the means of securing so large a circle of customers. I may say in passing that no other Wool Merchant has been able to make a stand against Mr. Brooke; some have tried but had to give it up.5"
In 1874 Abraham Brooke was elected to the Commission of the Peace for the West Riding.6
One who was apprenticed to Abraham Brooke towards the end of his working life was Henry Norman Rae, who was to himself to set up a substantial business with a colleague as Pickles and Rae, Ltd, Wool and Top Merchants, at Greenhill Mills, Bradford.
Abraham Brooke died on 14 January 1881 at Croft House, Soothill. He was buried on 18 January 1881 at Hanging Heaton.7
