     William Colbeck was born in 1805 at Ireland. He was the son of James Colbeck.
William Colbeck married Hannah Armitage, daughter of William Armitage and Mary Farrar, on 8 June 1829 at Batley.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Spa Hill, Batley, as a clothier.²
He was listed in the census of 30 March 1851 at Well Street, Cripplegate, London, as a merchant, lodging in the home of James Weyman, a porter, as is another merchant.^3,4
William Colbeck died on 2 July 1862.⁵

He died in 1862, but Elizabeth Lancaster understands this photograph, with the name of a photographer in Philadelphia, to be of him, and that of his wife is certainly Hannah by comparison with a later one of her. William is known to have travelled on business, but we feel this is a rather early date for the photo. Any ideas? could it be a copy done in Philadelphia later of some images done by an early technique?

     Hannah Armitage was born on 15 December 1811.¹ She was the daughter of William Armitage and Mary Farrar. Hannah Armitage was baptized on 25 December 1811 at Batley.¹
She married William Colbeck, son of James Colbeck, on 8 June 1829 at Batley.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 Hannah Colbeck was listed at Spa Hill, Batley, as wife of William Colbeck.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the head of household at Havercroft, Batley, as a rag dealer employing 8 women. William is known to have travelled on business and is away from home.³
In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the head of household at Hanover Street, Batley, as a rag merchant's widow.⁴
Hannah Armitage died on 3 December 1873 at age 61.⁵

     Mary Sheard was born in 1771 at Batley. She was the daughter of George Sheard and Hannah Blakeley. Mary Sheard was baptized on 20 October 1771 at Batley.¹
She married Isaac Newsome, son of Joseph Newsome and Elizabeth Townend, on 28 May 1793 at Batley.¹
Mary Newsome died in 1815 at Batley. She was buried on 2 January 1815 at Batley ; aged 44.¹

     William Binns was born circa 1825. He was the son of Thomas Binns and Mary (?). William Binns appeared as a woolcomber aged 15 on the census of 6 June 1841 in the household of Mary Binns at Birkenshaw, Birstall.¹ William Binns died in 1842. He was probably the one buried on 19 April 1842 at St Paul, Birkenshaw,listed as a woolcomber.²

     Sarah Binns was born circa 1827. She was the daughter of Thomas Binns and Mary (?). Sarah Binns appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 in the household of Mary Binns at Birkenshaw, Birstall.¹

     Thomas Binns was born circa 1828 at Clayton, Bradford.¹ He was the son of Thomas Binns and Mary (?). Thomas Binns appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 in the household of Mary Binns at Birkenshaw, Birstall.² Thomas Binns married Nanny (?).
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Bottoms, Birkenshaw, as a cotton warp dresser.³

     James Binns was born circa 1830 at Bradford. He was the son of Thomas Binns and Mary (?). James Binns appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 in the household of Mary Binns at Birkenshaw, Birstall.¹
James Binns appeared as an engine tenter, aged 20 on the census of 30 March 1851 in the household of Mary Binns at Birkenshaw Bottoms.² James Binns married Elizabeth Embley, daughter of John Embley, on 13 May 1851 at St Peter's, Bradford, James was described as an engine tenter, the son of Thomas, a weaver.³

     John Thompson married Amy Buckler on 31 August 1727 at Batley.¹

     James Chadwick was born in 1736/37. He was the son of William Chadwick and Ann Shepley. James Chadwick was baptized on 22 January 1737 at Batley.¹
He married Elizabeth Wilby on 21 April 1760 at Batley witnesses Joseph Hey, Joseph Hepworth.¹
James Chadwick died in 1816 at Dewsbury.¹ He was buried on 20 December 1816 at Batley ; aged 79.¹

     Elizabeth Wilby married James Chadwick, son of William Chadwick and Ann Shepley, on 21 April 1760 at Batley witnesses Joseph Hey, Joseph Hepworth.¹

     Mary Chadwick was born in 1762. She was the daughter of James Chadwick and Elizabeth Wilby. Mary Chadwick was baptized on 31 October 1762 at Batley.
She married John Scott on 9 July 1786 at Thornhill spouse identified from baptisms of son James (Dade registers).

      James Thurman was also known as James Thurmand. He was born in 1760. He was the son of James Thurman and Ann Fearnsides. James Thurman was baptized on 3 October 1760 at Batley.¹
He married Nancy Joy, daughter of Matthew Joy and Susanna Wright, on 1 January 1787 at Birstall Married as James Thurman of Batley and Nancy Joy of Heckmondwike.²
James Thurman died in 1838 at Batley. He was buried on 16 December 1838 at Batley ; aged 78.¹

     Nancy Joy was born in 1766. She was baptized on 9 November 1766 at Birstall.¹
She was the daughter of Matthew Joy and Susanna Wright. Nancy Joy married James Thurman, son of James Thurman and Ann Fearnsides, on 1 January 1787 at Birstall Married as James Thurman of Batley and Nancy Joy of Heckmondwike.¹
Nancy Joy died in July 1826 at Batley at age 59. She was buried on 23 July 1826 at Batley.²

     Matthew Joy married Susanna Wright, daughter of Crispin Wright, on 16 June 1756 at Birstall Susanna was a minor, and both were described as of Heckmondwike.¹

      John Thurman was also known as John Thurmand. He was born on 29 October 1787.¹ He was baptized on 3 February 1788 at Batley.¹
He was the son of James Thurman and Nancy Joy. John Thurman married Susannah Ineson on 24 December 1812 at Batley witnesses were Joseph Bruce and Jeremiah Chadwick. John wrote, Susanna made her mark.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Staincliffe, Batley, as a woollen labourer, aged 55.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Staincliffe, Batley, as a blanket weaver aged 64.

      Joseph Thurman was also known as Joseph Thurmand. He was born on 10 January 1789.¹ He was baptized on 1 March 1789 at Batley.¹
He was the son of James Thurman and Nancy Joy. Joseph Thurman was buried on 22 March 1789 at Batley ; as son of James.¹

     William Thurman was born on 10 January 1789.¹ He was baptized on 27 June 1790 at Batley.¹
He was the son of James Thurman and Nancy Joy. William Thurman married Elizabeth Wharton, daughter of Christopher Wharton and Mary Healey, on 3 August 1820 at Batley witnesses were Benj Exley and (?) Thompson.¹

James Thurman married Rachel Stubley, daughter of Joshua Stubley and Mary Blackburn, in 1850.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Up Lane, Batley, as a woollen cloth weaver aged 47.³
He was listed as the head of household in the 7 April 1861 census at Up Lane, Batley, a woollen weaver, widower aged 57.⁴

James Thurman was for many years superintendant of Up Lane Sunday School.⁵
Isaac Binns tells of James Thurman keeping an old rope in his desk with which to chastise the disobedient ones. He tells us that the scholars at this school used to be taught arithmetic and writing, in addition to reading on the Sunday, and that this was all the education some people in Batley had.⁶
