This was the Park of Howley Hall, once home of the Saviles, but blown up around 1730.
Whilst such ruins as were left above ground gave little indication of the house's former grandeur, cellars remained, and in doing a little towards clearing these, Abraham Gledhill found a quantity of animal bones locally supposed to be the remains of a large bear said to have been kept at the Hall, and also, and this is still in the possession of a descendant, a silver coin bearing the inscription "Guglielmus III.,1697."1,5
