Some of the interesting photos Ian Bolton has sent me are badly damaged, and I was puzzled by the discrepancy between this and the way in which they were clearly valued by the family. The explanation was not one I would have guessed at; the damage occurred when his grandfather's house was destroyed by a cyclone in 1971! Although I have removed a few bad scratches from other photos, I have not before attempted so much of a restoration exercise as on these, and on this, perhaps the worst affected, I include a before. and after shot. Though damage still shows around Martha's eyes, and I can only add it to the website at a low resolution, this perhaps represents better a charming photo of some quality of Martha and her youngest daughter Amy.
