He was the last of the millers at the Manor corn mill at Carlinghow, where water from the Beck was channeled and dammed to power a water wheel.6 In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Commercial Street, Batley, a butcher. Entry is close to those for Ward's Hill.7
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Blakeridge Lane, Batley, as a butcher.
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Bleak House, Batley, as a retired butcher. Also present is a niece, Susan Walker aged 12.8
John Ward died in 1895. He was buried in 1895 at the cemetery, Batley.
