William Sheard was born in 1827. He was the son of Jonas Sheard and Eleanor Hey. William Sheard was baptized on 6 January 1828 at Batley.1
He married Sarah Ann Newsome, daughter of Joseph Newsome and Mary Gill, on 1 January 1849 at Batley giving his occupation as dyer.1

William Sheard was the first dyer at Colbeck's new Cheapside Mill.2
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Albert St, Batley, as a journeyman dyer at a woollen mill.3
He married Emily Walker Fawcett, daughter of George Fawcett and Eliza Walker, in 1869 at Leeds.4
In 1870 William Sheard was listed as a dyer's mgr. at Stanley Terrace, Park Road, Batley.5
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Stanley Terrace, Batley, as a dyer aged 43.6

According to a family story, Jonas's defection was quite a setback for the firm
Learning his trade from his father, William, he was privy to the secrets of the business. At the age of 19 or 20 he was purported to have abandoned the business and have stolen/copied/taken the formulae to the USA and to Germany, which was at that time a major competitor to England in aniline dyestuffs. He was thought to have sold them or worked for a short time in Germany, and was lost track of by the family".7

It is hard to know how to square this with Jonas's recorded travels to America. It may be rather that he took the secrets there, but I think it quite possible that he went to Germany sometime in the early 1870s. It will be seen from my account of John Blackburn that there were Batley contacts in Berlin.
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Grosvenor road, Batley, as a dyer, heavy woollens.8
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Bath Street, Batley, as a dyer aged 63.9

Theodore Cooke Taylor told Douglas Sheard that he had, as a very young man, been in partnership with his great grandfather William. It would seem from the births there of his children that William had spent some time in Leeds, perhaps gaining experience in the dyeing trade. but he was back in Batley by 1870 and this could well have been at that time.7
William's career spanned the period which saw the development of synthetic dyes, the first, mauveine. which produced an intense purple, being discoverd by accisent in 1856 by a William Perkins who was trying to synthesise quinine as a cure for malaria. Based on a coal tar product called aniline, he saw its potential and patented it. However, other chemical companies experimented further, and developed a wide range of synthetic colours. Many were coal tar derivatives, so aniline became a generic name for synthetic dyes. A German company, BASF, beat Perkins to a patent for alizarin crimson, and Germany came to dominate dye production, but despite initial secrecy these dyes were soon available. My illustration from the 1870s shows local availability. William Sheard is said to have built up a very successful business, since dyeing became highly specialized and a mystery for the uninitiated, such as mill owners. Dyers bought and mixed the dyestuffs and chemicals, supplied their own labour, and provided a service dyeing in their customers’ premises with the mills’ own dyeing equipment, thus having no outlay for capital investment.

The family legend of William is that he was a dramatic and hard living character. He was a Freemason, Master of Trafalgar Lodge Batley No. 971 from 1863 until his death in 1891. He used to play cards and roust in the nights and, in full evening dress, ride a fine horse into the various dyehouses for the first shift of the morning, organizing the work from the saddle!7
