In the census of 3 April 1881 Susan Margaret Carter and her sister Catherine Elizabeth Carter were listed at Oakwell Hall, Birstall, as schoolmistresses. There were only four pupils present at this time, but also present were a cook and a German governess.3

In 1882 Susan, in bed in the chamber above the parlour, had an unpleasant awakening when a gale brought down a chimney at Oakwell, crashing through the roof and floor below. She landed on top of a grand piano, and lay there for some time with heavy debris falling around her. Forunately, though severely shaken, there seems to have been no lasting injury.The design of the ceiling had earlier been recorded by her cousin Max William Blakeley.4
In the census of 5 April 1891 she was listed as the head of household at Oakwell Hall, Birstall, as head of a Ladies School. Despite this of the eight pupils present one is male. Also present are a teacher of French and German and a cook and housemaid.5

George Markham Tweddell

#4731, b. 20 March 1823
     George Markham Tweddell was born on 20 March 1823.1
He married Elizabeth Cole on 31 December 1843 at the Parish Church, Stokesley.
George was a printer and publisher in Stokesley, and a prolific writer and poet as was his wife. His works included "The Bards and Authors of Cleveland and South Durham" and many poems about Freemasonry.1
George Markham Tweddell also went by the name of Peter Proletarious by way of pen name. George's wife Elizabeth was also a poet who wrote in the Cleveland dialect under the pen name of Florence Cleveland. He His sympathies lay with the working man and the Chartist movement.
For some years he and Elizabeth ran an "Industrial School" in Bury, but returned to Stokesley when the School was closed.
By 1877 Isaac Binns must have been acquainted with George for he was one of those who contributed to the "Purse of Gold" raised to assist the Tweddells at a time of financial hardship.1
In November 1881 George Markham Tweddell wrote to Isaac Binns with a biography of his wife, Elizabeth, whose work Isaac must have been interested in publishing.
George Markham Tweddell contributed a poem to Isaac Binns's obituary.
