     Elizabeth Burnill was born circa 1811 at West Ardsley. She married Robert Brearley, son of Robert Brearley and Dorothy Hall, on 11 June 1832 at Rothwell.
In the census of 6 June 1841 Elizabeth Brearley was listed at Clerk Geen, Batley, as wife of Robert Brearley.¹
In the census of 30 March 1851 Elizabeth Brearley was listed at Clerk Green, Batley, as wife of Robert Brearley.²
In the census of 7 April 1861 Elizabeth Brearley was listed at Queen Street, Batley, as wife of Robert Brearley.³
In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the head of household at Dryfield Cottage, Healey, Batley, as a widow, deriving income from interest money.⁴
She was listed in the census of 3 April 1881 at Queen Street, Batley, aged 70, with one domestic servant, Elizabeth Goodall.⁵
Elizabeth Burnill died on 12 June 1885.⁶

     Grace Brearley was born in 1831 at Soothill.¹ She was the daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill. Grace Brearley was baptized on 6 December 1831 at Woodkirk as daughter of Elizabeth Burnhill.
In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as aged 9 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Clerk Geen, Batley.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as a woollen warper aged 19 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Clerk Green, Batley.¹
Grace Brearley married Joseph Hall, son of Thomas Hall and Bathsheba Healey, in 1853 marriage deduced from presence of son Robert Hall with grandmother Elizabeth Brearley in 1871. Grace's age fits with that of daughter of Elizabeth and late husband Robert Brearley.³
In the census of 7 April 1861 Grace Hall was listed at Batley as wife of Joseph Hall.⁴
Grace Brearley married Robert Dex Keighley, son of Henry Keighley and Mary Dex, in 1867.⁵
In the census of 5 April 1891 Grace Keighley was listed at Hanover St., Batley, as wife of Robert Dex Keighley.⁶
Grace Keighley died in 1892; aged 61.⁷

     Joseph Hall was born in 1829. He was the son of Thomas Hall and Bathsheba Healey. Joseph Hall was baptized on 20 September 1829 at Batley.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the brother of John Hall.² He and his brother were I believe those listed in the census of 1851 at Cross Wynd, Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland, those lodging with Elizabeth Farquhar and family as wool dealers employing 4 women and 2 boys.³
Joseph Hall married Grace Brearley, daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill, in 1853 marriage deduced from presence of son Robert Hall with grandmother Elizabeth Brearley in 1871. Grace's age fits with that of daughter of Elizabeth and late husband Robert Brearley.⁴
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Batley as a Book-keeper in a mill, aged 31.⁵

     George Hall was born circa 1792. He was the son of Thomas Hall and Frances Allott. George Hall died on 1 January 1793; recorded on parents' gravestone.¹

     Joseph Hall was born on 10 September 1806. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Joseph Hall was baptized on 5 October 1806 at Batley Parish Church.¹
He died before 1817.

     Grace Hall was born on 16 July 1805. She was the daughter of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Grace Hall was baptized on 20 October 1805 at Batley Parish Church.¹
She married James Redfearn, son of Thomas Redfearn and Mary Hall, on 25 July 1822 at Batley on the same day as her siter Martha married Joshua Drake.¹ In the census of 6 June 1841 Grace Redfearn was listed at The Commercial Inn, Clerk Green, as wife of James Redfearn.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a Clothier and publican. also with the family are 2 nephews, Thomas Redfearn and Benjamin Mortimer, and a servant, Margaret Dunagan, from Ireland.³
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as the head of household at Commercial Inn, Clerk Green, as an innkeeper.⁴
In a directory of the same year she is listed as a woollen manufacturer.
She was listed in the census of 2 April 1871 at Clay Fold, Batley, as a victualler. There is also a servant Elizabeth Brown.⁵

     Harriot Hall was born on 9 October 1807. She was the daughter of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Harriot Hall was baptized on 25 December 1807 at Batley Parish Church.¹
She died on 30 June 1824 at age 16. She was buried on 4 July 1824 at Batley ; aged 16.¹

     John Hall was born on 20 May 1800. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. John Hall was baptized on 17 September 1800 at Batley Parish Church.¹
He died in 1819. He was buried on 8 June 1819 ; aged 18.¹

     Martha Hall was born on 22 November 1803. She was the daughter of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Martha Hall was baptized on 25 December 1803 at Batley Parish Church.¹
She married Joshua Drake, son of Francis Drake and Sarah Wood, on 25 July 1822 at Batley on the same day as her siter Grace married James Redfearn.¹ In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a woollen labourer, heading the household since her husband Joshua was in debtors Gaol along with several colleagues from Clerk Green.²
Martha Drake married Watson Tetley in 1854.³

     Mary Hall was born on 6 November 1796. She was the daughter of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Mary Hall was baptized on 27 November 1796 at Batley Parish Church.¹

     Thomas Hall was born on 12 February 1799. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Thomas Hall was baptized on 4 May 1799 at Batley Parish Church.
He married Bathsheba Healey, daughter of John Healey and Alice Carr, on 8 August 1819 at Dewsbury as Thomas Hall of Batley. Witnesses were David Haley and John Smith.¹
Thomas Hall married Letitia Healey, daughter of John Healey and Alice Carr, on 23 April 1837 at Mirfield as Thomas Hale, a widower and Latitia Heley. Witnesses were John Secker(?) and Bathsheba Heley, the latter probably the one baptised August 10th 1790 in Mirfield as daughter of Benjamin.²
Thomas Hall appeared with other Batley men including my ggg-grandfather William Blackburn on the census of 6 June 1841 as a prisoner in York Castle, then serving as a debtors gaol
; a prisoner for debt, along with others I believe to be from Batley.³ In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a woollen waste dealer.⁴
He was listed in the census of 7 April 1861 at Clay Fold, Batley, Wool waste and rag merchant.⁵
Thomas Hall died on 8 December 1869 at age 70.

     Alice Hall was born on 20 April 1809. She was the daughter of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Alice Hall was baptized on 24 July 1809 at Batley Parish Church.¹
She married Joshua Pyrah, son of Mark Pyrah and Elizabeth Hardcastle, on 4 June 1827 at Batley witnesses were George Hall and Mark Pyrah.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 Alice Pyrah was listed at Batley as wife of Joshua Pyrah.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 Alice Pyrah was listed at Aldams Head, Dewsbury, as wife of Joshua Pyrah.³

     Benjamin Hall was born in 1818. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Benjamin Hall was baptized on 17 September 1818 at Batley Parish Church.¹
He married Rachel Chadwick, daughter of Thomas Chadwick, on 13 February 1840 at Dewsbury I think it was this Benjamin who married Rachel, as they were much of an age, and his early death would fit with her remarriage.^2,3
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the head of household at Eightlands, Dewsbury, as a cloth miller.⁴
Benjamin Hall died in 1843. He was buried on 25 June 1843 at Batley ; aged 24.¹

     Joseph Hall was born in 1817. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor. Joseph Hall was baptized on 6 July 1817 at Batley Parish Church.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as a woollen labourer the son of Joseph Hall at Clerk Green, Batley.²
Joseph Hall married Ann Ellis on 21 November 1841 at Batley witness Thomas Hall.^3,1
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a waste and butter dealer.⁴
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, as a grocer.

     William Hall was born in 1814. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor.
William Hall was baptized on 19 June 1814 at Batley Parish Church.¹
He married Harriet Pycock on 27 May 1835 at Kingston upon Hull.²
Then a deputy constable at Batley, in 1842 William Hall followed a mob of plug rioters to Clerk Green Mill, and saw them tapping the boiler there following a leader's orders, then going on to other mills. Some of the manufacturers knew the leader's name as Dewhirst.^3,4 The manufacturers affected were asking that the perpetrators were arrested, and William, summoned by the local magistrates, was asked to find Dewshirst. Magistrate John Beswicke Greenwood said that if William succeeded he would ensure that he got a reward.
William Hall was indeed able to arrest Dewhirst, recognising him the next day despite Dewhirst being disguised. With the assistance of a Frank Wormald, Esq, who was passing in his carriage, he was able to seize him, initially imprisoning him at Dewsbury. Dewhirst was regarded as so important a capture that a troop of soldiers attended William with him when he was taken to Thornhill Railway Station, en route to York for trial at the Assizes there.⁴
Having been able to arrest Dewhirst, William is understood to have received a Government reward of £50, fulfilling John Beswicke Greenwood's promise.⁴


Dewhirst was sentenced to a year in prison, served at York, but received something of a hero's welcome in Dewsbury on his release.

In 1844 William Hall was listed as parish constable.⁵
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Clerk Green, Batley, assistant overseer at woollen mill (entered as Heall).⁶
On 12 May 1853 William Hall was appointed Superintendent Constable for the Dewsbury petty sessional division.⁷
On 20 September 1855 William Hall married Eliza Sharp, daughter of Samuel Sharp and Sarah Beaumont, at Batley.^2,1
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Sessions House Yard, Cornmarket, Pontefract, Superintendent, West Riding Constabulary, aged 46.⁸
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Sessions House Yard, Pontefract, as Superintendent of West Riding Constabulary. Here William has his grandaughter Eliza Ellen with him, which may have given welcome assistance to his daughter Mary, now married to the innkeeper of The Fleece in Batley, and with five older children and a five month baby. There is also a general domestic servant, Mary Newton.⁹
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at West View, Carleton, Pontefract, Ex Supt. Police, Wine and Spirit Agent. aged 66.¹⁰
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Elm Villa, Tanshelf, Pontefract, as a retired Supt. of Police.¹¹
William Hall died on 23 November 1896 at Batley.¹²

     Thomas Brearley was born on 4 January 1835.¹ He was the son of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill. Thomas Brearley was baptized on 26 April 1835 at Batley.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as aged 6 the son of Robert Brearley at Clerk Geen, Batley.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as as his father's assistant, aged 19 the son of Robert Brearley at Clerk Green, Batley.³
Thomas Brearley married Hannah Morrell on 27 May 1856 at Spofforth.⁴
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at King Street, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer.⁵
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Oakwood House, Upper Batley, Batley, as a J. P. and woollen manufacturer employing 300 hands. A sister-in-law Frances Morrell is also present as are three domestic servants, whilst adjacetnt entries for two lodge show a gardener and coachman with their families.⁶
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Oakwood House, Upper Batley Lane, Batley, as a woollen manufacturer. James Willans, writing in the previous year, tells us that the family business was then carried on by Thomas, by then a J.P., under the name of Robert Brearley and Son.^7,8
On 18 April 1881 Thomas Brearley laid the foundation stone of Batley Hospital and is said to have headed the subscription list with the sum of one thousand pounds. Thomas Brearley was retired a few years prior to his death and went to live in Harrogate.⁹
He died in 1890. He was buried on 6 February 1890 at the Cemetery, Batley.

     Emma Brearley was born circa 1837. She was the daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill. In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as aged 3 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Clerk Geen, Batley.¹
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as as a scholar aged 13 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Clerk Green, Batley.²
Emma Brearley married Thomas Coates, son of John Coates and Mary (?), on 22 January 1858 at The Parish Church, Batley, Thomas was described as a graocer and tea dealer, of Commercial street.³

     Jane Brearley was born on 17 June 1844.¹ She was the daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill. Jane Brearley was baptized on 9 August 1844 at Batley.¹

In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as aged 16 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Queen Street, Batley.³
Jane Brearley married James Joshua Carter, son of Joshua Carter and Ann (?), on 31 July 1863 at Batley.¹
In the census of 2 April 1871 Jane Carter was listed at Blakeridge Lane, Batley, as wife of James Joshua Carter.⁴
Jane Brearley died on 22 February 1881 at Batley at age 36.⁵

     Dorothy Brearley was born circa 1846. She was the daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill. In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as a scholar aged 4 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Clerk Green, Batley.¹
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as aged 14 the daughter of Robert Brearley at Queen Street, Batley.²
Dorothy Brearley married John Priestley Middlebrook, son of John Middlebrook and Eliza Priestley, on 7 April 1870 at Wesleyan Chapel, Batley.^3,4
In the census of 2 April 1871 Dorothy Brearley was listed at North Terrace, Gomersal, as wife of John Priestley Middlebrook.⁵
In the census of 3 April 1881 she was listed as in the household of John Priestley Middlebrook at Hollybank, Field Hill, Batley.⁶
In the census of 5 April 1891 Dorothy Middlebrook was listed at Purlwell Lane, Ivy Bank, Batley, as wife of John Priestley Middlebrook.

     Robert Hall was born on 5 April 1854.¹ He was the son of Joseph Hall and Grace Brearley. Robert Hall was baptized on 14 May 1854 at Batley.¹
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as a scholar aged 7 the son of Joseph Hall at Batley.²
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as an apprentice to the woollen trade, aged 16 the grandson of Elizabeth Brearley.³ Robert Hall married Charlotte Mason Johnson on 22 May 1876 at Wesleyan Church, Hill Top, West Bromwich.^4,5
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Dark Lane, Batley, as a manager.⁶
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at 67 Dark Lane, Batley, as a woollen mill manager.⁷
In the census of 31 March 1901 he was listed as the head of household at Purlwell Hall Road, Batley.⁸
In the census of 1911 he was listed as the head of household at Batley as a widower, a woollen cloth manufacturer, an employer.⁹

     Thomas Burnhill Hall In 1881 living with mother and stepfather Robert Dex Keighley. He was born circa 1857. He was the son of Joseph Hall and Grace Brearley. In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as a scholar aged 3 the son of Joseph Hall at Batley.¹

     Hugh Hall was born on 15 February 1860 at Batley.¹ He was the son of Joseph Hall and Grace Brearley. Hugh Hall was baptized on 22 April 1860 at Batley.¹
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as aged 1 the son of Joseph Hall at Batley.²

     Robert Dex Keighley was born in 1819 at Heckmondwike. He was the son of Henry Keighley and Mary Dex. Robert Dex Keighley is said to have received his early training from Dr Rayner of Birstall, and qualified as a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. in 1842.¹
He married Hannah Clapham, daughter of John Clapham and Hannah Crowther, on 4 September 1844 at Batley.²
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the head of household at Havercroft, Batley, as a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, London, as General Practitioner.³
Robert Dex Keighley married Grace Brearley, daughter of Robert Brearley and Elizabeth Burnill, in 1867.⁴
Robert Dex Keighley served on Batley's first Town Council in 1869. He was elected Mayor of Batley on 9 November 1871.
He was listed in the census of 3 April 1881 at Hanover Street, Batley, as a General Practitioner, Justice of the Peace.⁵
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Hanover St., Batley, Medical General Practitioner, J.P. (Jno Hall Woods, Medical General Practitioner, lodging with the family).⁶
He, a widower and Surgeon of Batley, married Susannah Butler on 5 October 1893 at St Paul's Church, Richardshaw Lane, Stanningley, Pudsey, by licence. Witnesses were Joseph Butler Knowles, Henry William Butler, M E Knowles and A Appleyard. (entry No 61 on microfiches).⁷
Robert Dex Keighley died on 8 September 1899 at Batley.^8,9

     Herbert Keighley was born circa 1868. He was the son of Robert Dex Keighley and Grace Brearley. Herbert Keighley appeared as a Medical student, aged 22 on the census of 5 April 1891 in the household of Robert Dex Keighley and Grace Keighley at Hanover St., Batley.¹ Herbert Keighley married Minnie Wilson, daughter of Arthur Wilson, in 1898.²
He was listed in the census of 31 March 1901 at 11 Hanover St, Batley, Physician and Surgeon.³
Herbert Keighley was in partnership with Dr. Woods and Dr.Norman William Eley.

     Letitia Healey was born on 23 July 1799. She was the daughter of John Healey and Alice Carr. Letitia Healey was baptized on 18 August 1799 at Batley.¹
She married Thomas Hall, son of Joseph Hall and Elizabeth Taylor, on 23 April 1837 at Mirfield as Thomas Hale, a widower and Latitia Heley. Witnesses were John Secker(?) and Bathsheba Heley, the latter probably the one baptised August 10th 1790 in Mirfield as daughter of Benjamin.²
