In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the head of household at Peel Street, Batley, as a rag sorter, now shown as a widow. Here Elizabeth's age is given as 56, but I think this is an error and that this is the same Elizabeth as shown in the 1861 censuses with an age fitting with a birth in 1824. Her son William's age does not show this discrepancy.6
In the census of 3 April 1881 she was listed as the head of household at Peel Street, Batley, as a woollen rag sorter aged 56.7
Elizabeth Blackburn died on 17 December 1888.8

In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as as an errand boy aged 10 living with his mother Elizabeth Blackburn.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as a warehouseman aged 20 the son of Elizabeth Blackburn at Peel Street, Batley.3
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as an overlooker in a woollen rag mill the son of Elizabeth Blackburn at Peel Street, Batley.4
William Blackburn married Flora Annie Sykes, daughter of Ingham Sykes and Flora (?), on 20 September 1883 at Batley William was described as an ovelooker.5
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at 37 Bradford Road, Batley, as a rag and shoddy warehouse manager aged 40.6
William Blackburn died on 5 April 1899 at age 48; following a severe attack of bronchitis. A widower, he had arranged to get married again the following Saturday.7,8

I have not found a certain trace of what happened to Margaret, but she could be the Margaret Blackburn born in Staincliffe in service with the Coates family in Manningham, Bradford in 1871 and 1881.3,4

     George Blackburn was born in 1834 at Chapelfold Staincliffe, Batley. He was the son of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Castle. George Blackburn was baptized on 30 December 1834 at Batley.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the son of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Blackburn.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a cloth weaver the son of Joseph Blackburn at Havercroft, Batley.2
George Blackburn married Ann Thurman, daughter of James Thurman and Charlotte Middlebrook, on 12 April 1857 at Batley Parish Church.3,4

George Blackburn was for a long time in business with his uncles John and Charles Blackburn and cousin John William at the Old Mill in Batley, but in the early 1890s the existing partnership arrangement was dissolved and he set up on his own account as a mungo and shoddy manufacturer and merchant at the Providence Mill, Birstall. In both business connections he is said to have been a regular attender at Huddersfield market, and to have been well known in Leeds and Bradford and to the London rag people.5
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at New Road side, Batley, as a bookkeeper.6
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Linefield House, Batley, as a Shoddy, mungo and flock merchant.7

A Hospital for Batley

in 1878 George Blackburn was said to have been walking across Bank Fields with William James Richardson Fox and Robert Talbot when the conversation turned to Batley's lack of a Hospital of its own. There had been complaints about Batley patients not being given priority at the Dewsbury Hospital to which Batley had subscribed. At his suggestion a public meeting was called. Initially a house was rented as a cottage hospital.5,8
In 1881 A Hospital building was erected up at Carlinghow Field Hill to designs by Walter Hanstock.9,5

He was listed as the head of household in the 3 April 1881 census at Clarence House, Batley, a Shoddy and Mungo merchant employing 150 hands. there are two domestic servants.10
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Claremont House, Batley, as a rag merchant.11
Circa 1892 George Blackburn left the Old Mill to set up in business with his eldest son William Henry at Providence Mill, Birstall, as Messrs George Blackburn & Son.5
George Blackburn died on on 4 April 1899 , Good Friday, and was buried on Easter Monday.3
