     Elizabeth Chadwick was born in 1728. She was the daughter of William Chadwick and Ann Shepley. Elizabeth Chadwick was baptized on 9 July 1728 at Batley.

     Sarah Spedding married John Thompson, son of John Thompson and Amy Buckler, on 29 May 1758 at Parish Church, Batley.¹

     John Thurman was born in 1724. He was the son of John Thurman and Elizibeth Gomersal. John Thurman was baptized on 6 January 1723/24 at Batley.
He married Deborah Wilby, daughter of Alvera Wilby, on 5 June 1751 at Batley.¹

     John Scott married Mary Chadwick, daughter of James Chadwick and Elizabeth Wilby, on 9 July 1786 at Thornhill spouse identified from baptisms of son James (Dade registers).

     Ann Milns was the daughter of Benjamin Milns. Ann Milns married William Thompson, son of John Thompson and Sarah Spedding, on 27 November 1783 at Batley.

     Mary Elizabeth Blackburn was born in 1850. She was the daughter of Martha Blackburn. In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the granddaughter of Sarah Blackburn.¹ Mary Elizabeth Blackburn was baptized on 27 October 1852 at Batley.
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as a scholar aged 10 the daughter of Martha Blackburn at "top of the Hill"(adjacent to Purlwell), Batley.²
As of 2 April 1871, Mary Elizabeth Blackburn was also known as Mary Elizabeth Booth following her mother's marriage to James Booth. In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the daughter of James Willans Booth at Beck Lane, Batley.³

     Sarah Ann Blackburn was born on 21 July 1843 at Batley. She was the daughter of William Blackburn and Sarah Thompson. Sarah Ann Blackburn was baptized on 27 August 1843 at Batley.¹
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the daughter of Sarah Blackburn at Union Street, Batley.²
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as a woollen power loom weaver, the sister of Martha Blackburn.³
Sarah Ann Blackburn married Hiram Preston, son of John Preston and Hannah Firth, on 15 April 1865 at Batley Witnesses were Joseph Preston and George Blackburn. Sarah Ann, who made her mark, gave her father William's occupation as manufacturer.^4,1
Sarah Ann Blackburn died in 1866 at Batley. She was buried on 1 March 1866 at Batley.¹

     Elizabeth Terry was born in 1824 at Batley. She was the daughter of Mark Terry and Elizabeth Ineson. Elizabeth Terry was baptized on 17 September 1824 at Parish Church, Batley.¹
She was listed in the census of 6 June 1841 at Clerk Green, Batley, a Woollen lab.²
She married Thomas Blackburn, son of William Blackburn and Sarah Thompson, on 18 October 1849 at Batley.^3,1
In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as the daughter-in-law of Sarah Blackburn.⁴
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as the head of household at Peel St, Batley, a rag sorter, listed as a married woman but husband is absent.⁵
In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the head of household at Peel Street, Batley, as a rag sorter, now shown as a widow. Here Elizabeth's age is given as 56, but I think this is an error and that this is the same Elizabeth as shown in the 1861 censuses with an age fitting with a birth in 1824. Her son William's age does not show this discrepancy.⁶
In the census of 3 April 1881 she was listed as the head of household at Peel Street, Batley, as a woollen rag sorter aged 56.⁷
Elizabeth Blackburn died on 17 December 1888.⁸

     William Blackburn was born on 27 October 1850. He was the son of Thomas Blackburn and Elizabeth Terry.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as the grandson of Sarah Blackburn.¹
William Blackburn was baptized on 29 December 1852 at Parish Church, Batley.

In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as as an errand boy aged 10 living with his mother Elizabeth Blackburn.² In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as a warehouseman aged 20 the son of Elizabeth Blackburn at Peel Street, Batley.³
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as an overlooker in a woollen rag mill the son of Elizabeth Blackburn at Peel Street, Batley.⁴
William Blackburn married Flora Annie Sykes, daughter of Ingham Sykes and Flora (?), on 20 September 1883 at Batley William was described as an ovelooker.⁵
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at 37 Bradford Road, Batley, as a rag and shoddy warehouse manager aged 40.⁶
William Blackburn died on 5 April 1899 at age 48; following a severe attack of bronchitis. A widower, he had arranged to get married again the following Saturday.^7,8

     Martha Jane Fox was born circa 1837. She was the daughter of David Fox and Rachel Jubb. In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as the daughter of David Fox at Spa Hill, Batley.¹
In the census of 30 March 1851 se was listed as a scholar aged 14 the granddaughter of Joseph Jubb.² Martha Jane Fox married Edwin Wilson, son of Robert Wilson and Hannah Newsome, on 30 June 1856.³
In the census of 7 April 1861 Martha Wilson was listed at Hick Lane, Batley, as wife of Edwin Wilson.⁴
In the census of 2 April 1871 Martha Jane Wilson was listed at Brownhill as wife of Edwin Wilson.⁵
In the census of 3 April 1881 Martha Jane Wilson was listed at 5 Victoria Street, Southport, as wife of Edwin Wilson.⁶
Martha Jane Wilson was buried on 20 May 1889 at the Cemetery aged 52, buried with her husband and father-in-law.⁷

     Margaret Blackburn was born circa 1831. She was the daughter of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Castle. Margaret Blackburn was baptized on 20 February 1831 at Parish Church, Batley.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as the daughter of Joseph Blackburn at Staincliffe, Batley.²
I have not found a certain trace of what happened to Margaret, but she could be the Margaret Blackburn born in Staincliffe in service with the Coates family in Manningham, Bradford in 1871 and 1881.^3,4

     George Blackburn was born in 1834 at Chapelfold Staincliffe, Batley. He was the son of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Castle. George Blackburn was baptized on 30 December 1834 at Batley.
In the census of 6 June 1841 he was listed as the son of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Blackburn.¹ In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a cloth weaver the son of Joseph Blackburn at Havercroft, Batley.²
George Blackburn married Ann Thurman, daughter of James Thurman and Charlotte Middlebrook, on 12 April 1857 at Batley Parish Church.^3,4

George Blackburn was for a long time in business with his uncles John and Charles Blackburn and cousin John William at the Old Mill in Batley, but in the early 1890s the existing partnership arrangement was dissolved and he set up on his own account as a mungo and shoddy manufacturer and merchant at the Providence Mill, Birstall. In both business connections he is said to have been a regular attender at Huddersfield market, and to have been well known in Leeds and Bradford and to the London rag people.⁵
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at New Road side, Batley, as a bookkeeper.⁶
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Linefield House, Batley, as a Shoddy, mungo and flock merchant.⁷

A Hospital for Batley

in 1878 George Blackburn was said to have been walking across Bank Fields with William James Richardson Fox and Robert Talbot when the conversation turned to Batley's lack of a Hospital of its own. There had been complaints about Batley patients not being given priority at the Dewsbury Hospital to which Batley had subscribed. At his suggestion a public meeting was called. Initially a house was rented as a cottage hospital.^5,8
In 1881 A Hospital building was erected up at Carlinghow Field Hill to designs by Walter Hanstock.^9,5

He was listed as the head of household in the 3 April 1881 census at Clarence House, Batley, a Shoddy and Mungo merchant employing 150 hands. there are two domestic servants.¹⁰
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Claremont House, Batley, as a rag merchant.¹¹
Circa 1892 George Blackburn left the Old Mill to set up in business with his eldest son William Henry at Providence Mill, Birstall, as Messrs George Blackburn & Son.⁵
George Blackburn died on on 4 April 1899 , Good Friday, and was buried on Easter Monday.³

Sarah Blackburn married Samuel Hepworth Newsome, son of Benjamin Newsome and Elizabeth Gill, on 22 September 1860 at Batley witnesses were George Blackburn and John Shackleton. Sarah was described as a domestic servant and her father as a warehouseman at the time.³

In the census of 2 April 1871 Sarah Newsome was listed at Hanover Street, Batley, as wife of Samuel Hepworth Newsome.⁵
In the census of 3 April 1881 Sarah Newsome was listed at Caledonia Rd, Granville Terrace, Batley, as wife of Samuel Hepworth Newsome.⁶
In the census of 5 April 1891 Sarah Newsome was listed at Blackburn Place, Batley, as wife of Samuel Hepworth Newsome.⁷
In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as the head of household at 11 Blackburn Place, Batley, a widow aged 60. There is a boarder, Dai Firtzgerald, a coal agent and Wat Daies, an insurance agent, both from Wales.⁸

     Emma Blackburn was born on 3 May 1844. She was the daughter of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Castle. Emma Blackburn was baptized on 10 November 1844 at Batley.

Emma Blackburn married Benjamin Crossley, son of George Crossley, on 5 June 1862 at Batley.³

     Hannah Hill was born in 1809 at Dewsbury. She was the daughter of John Hill and Mary Wildsmith. Hannah Hill was baptized on 21 April 1809 at Dewsbury.¹
She married James Blackburn, son of William Blackburn and Martha (?), on 18 September 1831 at Birstall.²
In the census of 6 June 1841 Hannah Blackburn was listed at New Batley, Batley, as wife of James Blackburn.³

     John Blackburn was born on 16 March 1834. He was the son of James Blackburn and Hannah Hill. John Blackburn was listed aged 7 with his parents in the 30 Mar 1851 census at New Batley, Batley.¹ In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a woollen card fettler the son of James Blackburn at New Street, Batley.²
John Blackburn married Hepzibah Bruce, daughter of Ralph Bruce and Fanny Preston, on 29 September 1856 at the Parish Church, Birstall.^3,4
In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Cobden Street, Batley, as a woollen spinner.⁵
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Cobden Street, Batley, as an overlooker in a woollen mill.⁶

     Mary Blackburn was born on 25 October 1840 at New Batley, Batley. She was the daughter of James Blackburn and Hannah Hill. Mary Blackburn was baptized on 27 December 1840 at Hick Lane Chapel, Batley, aged 9 weeks.¹
She was listed aged 7 months with her parents in the 30 Mar 1851 census at New Batley, Batley.² In the census of 30 March 1851 she was listed as a scholar the daughter of James Blackburn at New Street, Batley.³
In the census of 7 April 1861 she was listed as a rag sorter the daughter of James Blackburn at Cobden St, Batley.⁴
She was listed in the census of 7 April 1861 Rag sorter.⁵
Mary Blackburn died in 1863; I have not found Mary in censuses later or a marriage for herand think she was probably the one who died in 1863. She was buried on 3 November 1863 at Batley.⁶

     James William Blackburn was born on 28 July 1857 at Batley. He was the son of John Blackburn and Hepzibah Bruce. James William Blackburn was baptized on 4 October 1857 at Batley.
He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 in the household of John Blackburn and Hepzibah Blackburn at Cobden Street, Batley.¹ In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as a woollen piecer the son of John Blackburn at Cobden Street, Batley.²
In 1890 James William Blackburn first appears in Berlin directories as an agent for textile machinery, and continues to be listed until the year of his death.³
He died in 1919 at Berlin.

     Hepzibah Bruce was born on 14 February 1834 at Heckmondwike. She was the daughter of Ralph Bruce and Fanny Preston. Hepzibah Bruce was baptized on 7 April 1834 at Old Chapel Independent, Heckmondwike.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 she was listed as aged 7 in the household of Ralph Bruce at Chapel Lane, Birstall.²
Hepzibah Bruce appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 in the household of her grandmother Hepzibah Preston at Top of Town, Heckmondwike; as a widow aged 71, a baker of oat meal bread.³ Hepzibah Bruce married John Blackburn, son of James Blackburn and Hannah Hill, on 29 September 1856 at the Parish Church, Birstall.^4,5
Hepzibah Blackburn appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 as born in Heckmondwike, wife of of John Blackburn and John Blackburn at Cobden Street, Batley.⁶ In the census of 2 April 1871 Hepzibah Blackburn was listed at Cobden Street, Batley, as wife of John Blackburn.⁷
Hepzibah Blackburn appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 in the household of William Henry Stubley at the White Horse, Oxford Street, Gomersal, living on her own means.⁸ Hepzibah Bruce died on 23 May 1898 at age 64.

     Mary Elizabeth Blackburn was born in 1867. She was the daughter of John Blackburn and Hepzibah Bruce. In the census of 2 April 1871 she was listed as the daughter of John Blackburn at Cobden Street, Batley.¹
In the census of 5 April 1891 she was listed as as a domestic servant the sister-in-law of William Henry Stubley at the White Horse, Oxford Street, Gomersal.²
In the census of 31 March 1901 she was listed as a woollen cloth burler the sister of Emma Stubley Stubley.³ Mary Elizabeth Blackburn died on 14 February 1940.

     Henry Blackburn was born on 31 March 1842. He was the son of Joseph Blackburn and Martha Castle. Henry Blackburn was baptized on 22 May 1842 at Batley.
In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a piecer in woollen mill, aged 8 the son of Joseph Blackburn at Havercroft, Batley.¹
Henry Blackburn died in 1857. He was buried on 2 June 1857 at Batley ; aged 15.²

     Ann Greenwood was born on 4 July 1775 at Batley. She was the daughter of William Greenwood. Ann Greenwood was baptized on 6 August 1775 at Batley.
She married George Sheard, son of George Sheard and Hannah Blakeley, on 30 June 1794 at Batley The marriage was witnessed by Michael Sheard, which I take to be his younger brother, as the signature resembles that at Michael's own marriage. The other witness was David Blakeley.¹

Ann Greenwood died in 1832. She was buried on 5 February 1832 at Batley ; aged 56.¹

     Elizabeth Chappel was born on 13 December 1781 at Batley. She was the daughter of Joseph Chappel and Mary Peel. Elizabeth Chappel was baptized on 13 January 1782 at Batley.¹
She married Benjamin Sheard, son of George Sheard and Hannah Blakeley, on 22 December 1798 at Batley witnessed by George Sheard and Jeremiah Chadwick.¹
In the census of 6 June 1841 Elizabeth Sheard was listed at Havercroft, Batley, as wife of Benjamin Sheard.²
