Edward Spedding and Elizabeth France Fell were listed in the census of 7 April 1861 at The Deaf and Dumb Institution, Doncaster, as pupils. The couple were later to marry, and it seems likely that this was where they met. This Institution, founded in 1829, was the earliest school for the deaf in Yorkshire. Pupils had been in the way of waving from the school balcony at racegoers, who would throw them coins, though these were rounded up by the headmaster as additional income. However, concerns about the immorailty of racegoing and betting led to a resolution in this year "that the children of the institution be not allowed in future to appear on the balcony during the race week."4
Edward Spedding married Elizabeth France Fell in 1870.
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Taylor Street, Batley, as a stone carver, listed as deaf and dumb from birth.5
