Robert Shackleton was born circa 1818 at Leeds. He was the son of Richard Shackleton and Ann (?). In the census of 30 March 1851 he was listed as a grocer and watchmaker aged 33 the brother of Thomas Walker Shackleton.1 Titus Sheard treasured a bible given to him by Robert Shackleton when Titus was a pupil at Zion Sunday School.2
He married Rachel Jubb, daughter of Joseph Jubb and Letitia Talbot, and widow of David Fox, in 1855.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the head of household at Up Lane, Batley, as a rag merchant employing 5 women.4
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as the head of household at Hanover Street, Batley, as Borough Accountant (Batley's first) Two of his wife's grandsons, David and John Joseph Burnley, were with him at this time. The former was described as junior clerk to accountant and I imagine was assisting Robert. John Joseph was described as junior clerk to the Gas Works office.5
Robert Shackleton died on 24 September 1874 at Batley.6
He was succeeded as Borough Accountant by Isaac Binns.6
