Walter Hanstock

#272, b. circa 1842, d. 6 October 1900
Walter Hanstock|b. c 1842\nd. 6 Oct 1900|p10.htm#i272|William Hanstock||p306.htm#i8487||||||||||||||||
Walter Hanstock was born circa 1842 at Chesterfield.
He was the son of William Hanstock. He was listed in the census of 7 April 1861 at Castle Yard, Chesterfield, as an architect's apprentice aged 18, the son of William Hanstock, a publican and printer.1
Walter Hanstock came to Batley circa 1864.
It is thought to have been in about in 1864 that Walter Hanstock was taken on as a draughtsman/architectural assistant to Michael Sheard He had RIBA training, and clearly proved highly competent, being made a partner after a few years.

Batley Cemetery

Walter Hanstock is thought to have played a significant part in this scheme, but it is not clear if he was yet a partner, as early references only mention Michael.
An account of some buildings in Batley by W.S. Banks says:-

"The Batley Cemetery occupies twelve acres of sloping land, and has two decorated chapels, with a spire rising from the ground between them, and an excellent registrar's house. Mr Michael Sheard of Batley was the architect"
Kelly's Directory of 1881 says the cemetery was "laid out in 1865 at a cost of £12,500 and contains twelve acres with two gothic mortuary chapels from designs by Michael Sheard, Esq.
Certainly Walter's talents must have been showing him to be an ideal candidate for partnership.2,3

Walter Hanstock married Sarah Ann Blackburn, daughter of John Blackburn and Sarah Preston, on 3 March 1868 at Batley Witnesses were John Blackburn and William Hanstock.4

Zion Chapel

In that year came the building of this fine chapel which still graces Batley Market Place.
It seems likely that Walter made a substantial contribution to this project headed by Michael Sheard , and his charming illustration of the scheme survives.

He was listed as the head of household in the 2 April 1871 census at Lamplands, Batley, as an architect.5

Works by Sheard and Hanstock included:-

Mortuary chapels 1865.6
St Thomas's Church 1868. Michael presented the East window in memory of his daughter Gertrude who had died the previous year, whilst the font and pulpit were gifts from his brothers George and Benjamin repectively.
Zion Chapel 1868.
Methodist Chapel, Adwalton.
Drill Hall, Bradford Road, 1870. This was for the use of the rifle volunteers then commanded by Michael's brother Benjamin Sheard.
St Saviour, Brownhill 1870-71.
West Riding Union Bank, 1871.
Cross Bank Wesleyan Chapel 1871. This building, now demolished, was erected by the family of Robert Brearley, and the style is said to have been broad Italian, with coloured columns of red mansfield and local stone and polished granite columns on the west front.7
All Saints, restoration 1872-3.
St. Thomas's School 1873.
Station Rd: warehouse for Abraham Brooke c1873.6
Villas in Batley including "The Rookery" for Samuel Senior and "The Woodlands" now the Bagshaw Museum, for George Sheard.

Walter Hanstock and Michael Sheard took on Max William Blakeley as a trainee during the 1870s.8
In 1878 Walter's partnership with Michael Sheard was dissolved.
In 1881 A Hospital building was erected up Carlinghow Field Hill to designs by Walter Hanstock which he provided free of charge.9,10
He was listed as the head of household in the 3 April 1881 census at Lamplands, Field Hill, Batley, as an architect. Kelly's West Riding Directory of that year, however, lists him at Bleak House.11,3
Walter Hanstock's artistic talents can be seen not only in architectural work but in some sketches illustrating "Morley Ancient and Modern" published in 1886.12
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at 35 Bath Street, North Meols, Southport, Lancashire, perhaps seeking relief from the gout from which he suffered.13
He took his son Arthur Walter Hanstock into the practice in 1898.
Arthur Walter took over the practice on the death of his father in 1900.
Walter Hanstock died on 6 October 1900 at Harrogate According to his obituary his death was attributable to gout, from which he had suffered for 27 years. He was buried at the Cemetery, Batley.

Walter Hanstock was responsible for many buildings in Batley, initially in partnership with Michael Sheard, but after 1878 when the partnership was dissolved, on his own account and later in partnership with his son Arthur Walter Hanstock. The firm made a speciality of public baths, and in 1899 they were awarded second prize in the competition for Leeds City Markets.6

In practice on his own account Walter designed:-.

Board Schools including Park Road 1875.
Hanging Heaton Methodist Chapel 1879.
Batley Hospital, 1881.
Enlargement and remodelling of Wesleyan Sunday Schools adjacent to Cross Bank Chapel, Batley. 1882.14
Wesleyan day and Sunday school, Morley 1883.

Ebenezer Congregational church, Dewsbury.1884.
Alterations to St Peter's Church, Morley, 1885.
Public baths 1893.
Baptist Chapel Morley 1896.
Town Hall 1899 - a lavish scheme for a replacement which was not built, though some preparatory work was done. Instead the old one, badly fire damaged in 1902, was extended by his son.
and other churches, schools, baths etc. in Leeds, Dewsbury, Morley and the neighbourhood.
He designed the Batley Hospital and the Town Mission Hall free of charge.
