In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as the son of Thomas Hall at Clerk Green, Batley.3
In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as assistant (presumably to his father) the son of Thomas Hall at Purlwell Lane, Batley.4
It was in that year that Louis joined Batley Cricket Club.
In 1875 Louis Hall pulled out of the firm of "Thomas Hall's Sons" in which he had been in partnership with his brothers as woollen manufacturers.5
Louis Hall the Yorkshire Cricketer
I will not attempt to give a full account of Louis' career, for this is admirably done on the website of "The Cricket History of Calderdale and Kirklees" to which my footnote gives a link.6
However Louis is said to have made his cricketing debut for Yorkshire in 1873 and is described as the first teetotaller in Yorkshire's eleven year first class history. He was to play for them until 1892.
1878 saw Louis Hall's cricketing career really take off with a score of 78 against an Austrailan eleven.
He married Amelia Dean, daughter of William Dean and Sarah Spedding, on 4 December 1878 at Batley.2
In the census of 3 April 1881 he was listed as the head of household at Central St., Batley, as a woollen merchant.7
In 1881 Louis Hall was listed in Kelly's directory as a woollen merchant at Station Road.8
In the census of 5 April 1891 he was listed as the head of household at Ivy Cottage, 25 Purlwell Lane, Batley, as a professional cricketer, living next door to his brother Oliver.9
In 1894 Louis Hall formed part of the team which won the Heavy Woollen Cup for Batley, and is shown on the right of a photograph which also includes my great uncle John Sheard Blackburn.10
It was apparently to commemorate this that players were given the mementoes shown in my illustration. mine inscribed on the back as presented by the supporters of Batley C. A & F. Club to J. S. Blackburn, and made by Fattorini's of Bradford. I imagine that Louis would have also had one.
Cricket was not his only interest; he served for nine years as a liberal councillor. He was also a stalwart of Hick Lane Chapel, serving as steward and also as a lay preacher. In 1895 he left Batley to take up a post at Uppingham School.
On 2 January 1896 Batley staged an tea and concert in his honour in Batley Town Hall, at which he was presented with a cabinet of silver cutlery and a breakfast, tea and dinner service.11
In the census of 31 March 1901 he was listed as the head of household at High St., Uppingham, Rutland, as a teacher of cricket, and cricket and sports warehouse(sic).12
In the census of 2 April 1911 he was listed as the head of household at 1 Grosvenor Road, Batley, as a retired prof. cricketer , now Bagging merchant.13
Louis Hall died on 19 November 1915 at Morecambe, Lancashire, at age 63.1
