In the census of 7 April 1861 he was listed as a scholar aged 15 the son of Abraham Law at Law St, Batley.4
In a letter to the Leeds Mercury on 3 August 1869 Edwin, a grandson of Benjamin, shows some indignation at Samuel Jubb's account of the origins of the shoddy trade, which had no clear-cut attribution to his grandfather, saying:-

"That several persons may have commenced grinding shoddy almost (as it may appear to the author after the lapse of half a century) simultaneously is not at all impossible, as many persons are more apt at appropriating the inventions of others than of finding anything out for themselves."5

Edwin Law was listed in the census of 2 April 1871 at 13 Upper George St, Salford, Corporation clerk, lodging with John Pogson, cloth agent.6
He married Elizabeth Parr, daughter of Benjamin Parr and Sarah Ann Archer, in 1878.7
